Bill Staines Spring Concert with Opening Act: The Dūges, March 31

March 7, 2019

Sleder’s Family Tavern is pleased to announce the next concert in its On the Porch Concert Series featuring Red House Recording artist, Bill Staines.  Bill has been making his performances in Northern Michigan an annual rite of spring.  His touring up north started in 1994, and he has been part of Sleder’s On the Porch Concert Series since 1998.  This March will mark his 25th annual show in Traverse City area.  During that time, his fans have become his friends, so for many, this year’s show will be a musical reunion of friends and fans both old and new.  Spring will be here, and so too will Bill Staines to herald its arrival!

Bill is a true original, perhaps best described by the Hartford Courant when they wrote: “Bill Staines is one of our very best folk and country singer/songwriters.  He’s a New Englander who dreams of open plains and vast, Western skies, and damn his soul, he writes better cowboy songs than anybody in the Southwest.”

After touring and playing concerts for over 41 years, you would think that musician and songwriter Bill Staines might think about slowing down, but that’s just not the case.  Bill continues to perform more than 175 shows a year and drives close to 70,000 miles getting to them.  He is one of the most durable and beloved singers on the folk music scene today.

Nanci Griffith once wrote, “Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977.  He carries on where Woody left off- carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.”

“When do you think it will be time to retire?” someone once asked Bill.  He answered, “In the words of my old friend, Tommy Makem…about ten o’clock tonight.”

Opening Act: The Dūges

Opening for Bill Staines will be a fine duo,The Dūges.  The Dūges (Garrison Wilson and Doug Moser) have only recently formed as a musical duo, but their musical selections — ranging from classic folk, rock, and pop to Appalachian gospel — sound well established.  Garrison, a student of choral singing, is a recent transplant from the Western Slope of Colorado; Doug has played and sang in local groups for several decades.  Backing each other up on guitar, bass, and percussion, The Dūges specialize in following their Muse of spirited harmonies — always in the forefront.
