Vance Gilbert Kissing the Moose

Welcome, March! Is Smooching the Moose on Your Bucket List?

March 8, 2018

You know the old saying about March: “In like a lion; out like a lamb”?  Well, hello there, March!  We thought you were still February with those first days of sun.  February, for most of the month, didn’t know if it was coming or going.  First the bay froze, and then it thawed, and then, when it seemed as though everyone’s allergies were acting up, and birds were singing love songs, down came the snow again, and March roared in to remind us: Winter isn’t over.  And thank goodness!  There is much yet to enjoy during winter in Traverse City, like the Winter Signature Drinks at Sleder’s.  Some are hot with cocoa and Vanilla Stoli, and others are cold and creamy like the Nutty Moose made with Whipped Vodka, Kahlua, and Frangelico.  And we always have Irish Coffee and Baileys Irish Cream.

Sleder’s classic Irish-American Corned Beef Boiled Dinner is only a week away and served all day (11 am-10 pm) on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17.  Kennedy’s Kitchen will also be playing Irish music on the porch this Sunday, March 11.  Tickets are available now: Read details here.  Then, on the Sunday following St. Patrick’s Day weekend, March 25, folk music living legend Bill Staines will help us welcome actual spring with his original music on the porch.

You can see why Kim Schneider included Sleder’s Family Tavern, specifically kissing Randolph the Moose, in her new book, 100 Things to Do In Traverse City Before You Die (Schneider, 2018).  Thank you, Kim Schneider!  We agree; kissing the moose is lucky indeed!  Also, when you kiss the moose, our bartender sounds the bell, and your kiss causes a ripple of good feelings throughout the tavern.  What a testament to this community’s good sense and great humor, and we can’t thank Traverse City enough–the natives, visitors, new customers, loyalty card holders, and long time and next generation patrons–for choosing Sleder’s when there is so much good food and fun around.

Is smooching the moose on your bucket list?!  Schneider’s book is available at Brilliant Books and other local and national retailers (Photo credit of Schneider and her books in the gallery: The Ticker).
